Ministry Highlights:
Ladies Take-a-Break Kickoff
August 25, 2011
Come
for a time of fun and fellowship as we introduce our Fall Bible topic:
"Adventurous Prayer"; a study from the "Women of Faith" series. Prayer: we
know we should all do it more often; our days are full, our lives are
complicated, and our hearts are heavy with unspoken prayers. God knows,
and He is waiting for us to turn, and tell Him all about it. God is
listening for our whispers, and He will answer us.

Need Prayer?
Let us pray with you, and for you
August 25, 2011
Come
to the front of the sanctuary directly following the service so we can listen to
your needs, and pray with you and for you; or even just to talk.
Missions and Ministry Projects
Mission Partners
As a member of the Baptist Convention of
Ontario and Quebec, Avenue Road Baptist Church supports, through its church
budget and with special offerings, the work and mission of the Convention and of
Canadian Baptist Ministries in Canada and around the world. Support for Relief
and Development needs is given through the Sharing Way of CBM which works with
partner churches in many countries and through the World Aid program of the
Baptist World Alliance.
In addition, regular support is given to the Guelph Association of Baptist
Churches, to Camp Hermosa, to Matthew House Refugee Ministry in Toronto, to
Oasis Dufferin Community Centre and Food Bank in Toronto, to Friendship House in
Brantford, to Bethlehem Aboriginal Fellowship in Winnipeg, and to local
community projects like the Christmas Basket Fund, the Salvation Army Mitten
Tree, Trinity Community Table (meals for the needy), and other projects.
The church supports financially, and through prayer and encouragement, three
Global Partners-in-Mission who are currently serving with Canadian Baptist
Ministries: Rev. Johnny Byrne-Mamahit and Mrs. Paige Byrne-Mamahit in
leadership development and church planting ministries in Balikpapan, Indonesia.
Other prayer partners include such Canadian missionaries as Rev. Joyce Hancock
with rehabilitation of street kids in Brasilia, Brazil; Dietrich and Edith
Desmarais at Bethlehem Aboriginal Fellowship in Winnipeg; Phyllis Ortiz and
Erika Abele of Oasis Dufferin, Toronto, and Anne Woolgar of Matthew House,
Toronto.
The Church is kept up to date on the work of our partners through "Mosaic" a
publication of Canadian Baptist Ministries, "the Link and Visitor" from the
Baptist Women in Ontario and Quebec, "The Canadian Baptist" from the Baptist
Convention of Ontario and Quebec, the weekly CBM Prayer Line via internet with
requests printed in the Sunday Church Bulletin, the monthly newsletters of Oasis
and Matthew House, and through letters and email notes from the partners
themselves.
Outreach Projects
Showing the World Jesus' Love.
Service to others is one of our primary and practical ways of showing God's love to our neighbours: those across the street, and across the world. Here's a sampling of some of the work we share in at Avenue Road. Excited? Come on board, and make a difference with us!
Welcome House
Ministry to Refugees.
At our fall business meeting, the
congregation approved the proposal of our Refugee Task Force to create “Welcome
House,” a ministry to refugees in our church house.
In a nutshell, we will use the house to welcome refugees who have come through
the ministry of Matthew House in Toronto or Fort Erie for up to one year each as
they settle into life in Canada. We will provide volunteer support to help them
achieve independence, orienting them to our community and how to accomplish
day-to-day tasks here. $5000 is already committed by the Mission Circle and the
Friendship Circle for the start-up costs of this ministry, and a strong
volunteer team is in place. A document detailing the project is available in the
narthex.
If you would like to volunteer to help with rides from time to time, or any other service you could provide to new residents, please contact Linda Rothery, chair of our Welcome House team.
Thank you, especially to everyone who has worked so tirelessly to get the house ready for these new friends. We believe God has truly equipped us to accomplish the work he has given us. The hundreds of hours of labour you have given are greatly appreciated.
Community Clothesline
Helping stay warm.
Are you in need of gently used clothing for you and/or your family?
The “Community Clothesline” is a new and exciting ministry to the Cambridge
community run by Avenue Road Baptist Church. This service is FREE for any
Cambridge resident in need of practical assistance. Items include children’s,
women’s and men’s clothing and shoes.
The "Community Clothesline" uses a “drop-in” style approach where people can
come by anytime that suits them during our 'open' hours. The Community
Clothesline will be open Thursdays 12:30-2:30pm
If you have any interest in serving in this ministry, either on the front lines
or behind the scenes, please speak to Holly Heise.
Have something to donate? Donations of gently used clothing can be dropped off
to 465 Avenue Rd. Monday-Friday 9:00am-12:00pm.
For more information call: (519) 621-4391.
Please Note: We are currently accepting spring/summer donations. Personal items
(i.e. underwear) will not be accepted.
Community Programs
Many small ways to help out . . .
Did you know . . .
We save: - used eye glasses for Operation
Eyesight.
- Campbell soup labels for sports equipment.
- Zehr's grocery tapes for the Friendship Circle.
- aluminum rings from pop cans to donate for wheelchair
purchases.
- used postage stamps for the Oasis ministry.
We have a food box for donations that are used for the Food Bank.
We take donations of coffee, sugar, pasta, etc. to support the ongoing needs of
Trinity Table.
We support Matthew House in Toronto. Their needs are bedding, towels, dishes and
small appliances (i.e. toaster, kettles, etc.).
We support Oasis Centre with Christmas toys for their children's ministry.
All of this takes place in the alcove on your left, as you come through the main
doors of the church. Your contributions are gratefully appreciated. Thank you.
The Bridges Shelter
Serving our neighbours in downtown Cambridge.
Volunteers from Avenue Road serve down at the Bridges Shelter in downtown Cambridge the third Sunday of every month on a rotating basis. Service includes helping prepare, serve and clean up for those having dinner at the shelter. Come join us as we have a little fun in the kitchen, and wait on others with a smile!
